Designed by Jerry Lorenzo and released on 27 April 2019 as part of Nike's Air Fear Of God Strap line. This release has the Light Bone/Black-Sail colourway. The Air Fear of God project put a fashion label's proportions on Nike's basketball engineering, and Raid is the version of it that leans hardest towards the street rather than the court. Light Bone is the colour that makes the argument: an off white, slightly warm neutral with no team reference in it at all, the sort of tone that reads as clothing rather than as kit. Nike has spent decades building products around visible technology, from the pressurised Air unit that arrived with the Air Max in 1987 onwards, and a bone coloured collaboration shoe is what that technology looks like when the goal is silhouette instead of performance.
Two ways to wear it. Wide cream or sand trousers with a heavy off white knit, running the whole outfit inside one tonal family so the shoe reads as part of the silhouette rather than as footwear. Or black tapered trousers with a black long sleeve, using Light Bone as the single point of contrast at the floor. This wants long, loose legwear, not a slim jean, because the proportions of the shoe need room around them. Size true. For care, protect the pair before first wear, brush dust off weekly since off white greys out gradually rather than suddenly, and keep it away from monsoon streets entirely.
Nike's shoes moved into fashion through basketball. The Michael Jordan signing of 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made the brand the shoe of the game, and Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models became status markers in urban and hip hop dress before settling into casual and athleisure wardrobes in the 1990s and 2000s. Design led collaborations are the late stage of that process, when the company hands its silhouettes to people who are working in clothing rather than in sport. The result is judged by how it sits under a trouser, not by how it performs on a floor.
Light Bone is an unforgiving neutral. Off white shows dust and road film faster than grey and holds warm stains in a way that pure white does not, and on a shoe with large uninterrupted panels there is nowhere for a mark to hide. Collaboration builds in this part of the range change the materials, the proportions and the branding while keeping Nike's cushioning platform underneath, which is what makes them wearable rather than merely styled. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, is the company's oldest and most recognisable cushioning idea and the reason its lifestyle shoes still walk well. Expect a substantial, sculpted shoe rather than a light one.
