Culture Note™
Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 8 July 2024 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Dusty Cactus. Nike Grind takes manufacturing scrap and worn shoes and puts them back into new product and surfaces, and Next Nature is the version of that thinking you can buy off a shelf, a build brief that puts content into a mainstream silhouette rather than into a concept. This women's Air Force 1 Low 07 runs Dusty Cactus, a muted, dusty green that sits closer to a desert plant than to a sports colour. Choosing the AF1 for this is the meaningful part, because it is one of Nike's highest volume shoes, so a materials change here reaches far more feet than a limited release ever could.
Fit one: earth tones throughout, brown or khaki trousers with a cream knit, where dusty green completes a muted natural palette without adding brightness. Fit two: black straight jeans with a grey sweatshirt, using the green as the single unexpected note against a cold fit. Skip white socks, which will make the muted green look dull, and use a cream or grey instead. The AF1 collar sits high, so stack or clear the hem rather than splitting it. Clean with a barely damp cloth and mild soap, avoid soaking a -content upper because mixed materials dry at different rates, and keep it away from direct heat while drying.
From the 1980s Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Air Force 1 became a staple of mainstream American youth dress before returning through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks, largely in white. Taking that shoe into a dusty, plant-derived green is a departure, and doing it on a build makes the colour part of the argument rather than decoration. Nike Grind belongs to the same engineering vocabulary as Flywire, Lunarlite and Dri-FIT, technologies the company names openly, and Next Nature is the point where that vocabulary reaches the shelf rather than staying in a materials lab.
Next Nature builds substitute content for standard materials, and that shows in the character of the upper rather than in the shape: compositions read slightly softer and less uniform than virgin leather, with panel edges finished differently. Everything structural about the Air Force 1 Low stays, the thick midsole, the fully padded collar, the reinforced toe and the pivot-point outsole, along with Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed in the midsole that lets a shoe with this much mass stay comfortable across a day. A muted green needs texture to avoid looking flat, which suits a build where the material is slightly irregular. The women's last narrows through the midfoot.
