Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 23 June 2022 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a textile upper in White/Clear/White. Of everything in Nike's catalogue, the Air Force 1 was the boldest choice for a fashion label to take apart, because it is the shoe most people have the strongest opinion about. The Mid version adds the ankle strap that has always divided the silhouette's audience, and doing it all in white removes colour from the conversation entirely, leaving only the construction. That is the point of an Off-White project: the shoe becomes a diagram of itself, with stitching, labelling and edges pulled into view. A white on white Air Force 1 Mid is the most familiar object in sneakers and, treated this way, briefly unfamiliar again.
Two builds. All white: cream or ecru trousers with a white overshirt, committing fully, which only works if you are willing to clean the shoe constantly. Grounded: black tailored trousers with a black knit, so the white and the strap read as the deliberate break in an otherwise plain outfit. Air Force 1s run large, so half a size down suits most people, and the Mid strap can be worn loose or fastened. Keep this pair for dry days only, wipe it after every wear, and store it in the box with the tags and spare laces, since the extras are part of what you bought.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Air Force 1 became the plainest expression of that, a shoe judged by how clean you keep it. Fashion's interest in the model runs in the opposite direction, treating wear and exposed construction as the interesting part, which is why a project like this reads as an argument rather than a colourway. Nike has been comfortable in that exchange for years, working with artist Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022 and acquiring the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021. This shoe is the physical version of the same trade.
The base build is unchanged: thick leather panels, a padded collar, the strap across the ankle, a heavy midsole with Air cushioning sealed inside, and the circular pivot pattern underneath. Nike Air is pressurised gas held in the midsole, cushioning the company began making visible from the 1987 Air Max onward, although on this model it stays hidden. All white means every mark shows, and deconstructed detailing means you cannot scrub. Use a soft brush and mild solution on the leather, a dedicated cleaner on the midsole before yellowing sets, and keep the shoe away from unwashed denim, which will transfer dye into white leather permanently.
