Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 26 June 2024 as part of Nike's Air Max 90 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Baltic Blue/Armory Navy/Wolf Grey. The Air Max line began in 1987 and did something no previous cushioning system had managed: it made the mechanism visible. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, and once you could see it through a window, the technology became part of the shoe's appearance rather than a claim on a hangtag. The Air Max 90 is the model that turned that idea into a design language, splitting its upper into clearly separated layers so a colour can be assigned to each. This grade school pair runs Baltic Blue, a cool marine shade set against a light base, which is the sort of clean seasonal blue the model was built to display.
Baltic Blue is cool and clean, so keep the palette cold. Wear it with mid wash denim, a white tee and a navy or grey hoodie, letting the blue panels tie into the top half. Alternatively run black jogging trousers cuffed at the ankle with a grey zip up, using the blue as the single point of colour. Avoid warm oranges and browns, which clash with a marine blue. GS sizing runs smaller than adult numbering, so check the size conversion and leave growing room. Keep water out of the midsole, since trapped moisture damages cushioning over time, and clean the light base panels weekly to stop grime setting in.
Nike's own record names Air Max models, alongside Air Jordans and Air Force 1s, as staples of mainstream American youth dress, absorbed first through the urban and hip hop fashion of the 1980s and then again through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. The Air Max 90 carried more of that than most, because its layered upper made it endlessly recolourable and its visible unit made it instantly identifiable. A grade school pair in a clean blue is that heritage doing its ordinary job: a shoe that a teenager wears without knowing it is a landmark, which is the strongest form of influence there is.
The 90's architecture is a stack of distinct panels rather than a single moulded shell, and that is why colour blocking reads so precisely on it: each section holds its shade without bleeding into the next. Underneath sits the visible pressurised Air unit inherited from the family's 1987 debut, the element that made cushioning into an aesthetic. Bowerman's original waffle sole, made by pouring rubber into a kitchen appliance, is the ancestor of that entire way of thinking about the bottom of a shoe. Mixed material uppers need mixed care: brush the mesh dry, wipe the smooth overlays with a damp cloth, and clean the midsole window carefully so the Air unit does not cloud over.
