Culture Note™
Released on 20 December 2024 and part of Nike's Air Max Ishod Wair SB line. This release has a suede upper in Black/Black/Black/White. Nike Air was the moment the brand stopped hiding its engineering. The pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole had been doing quiet work until the Air Max of 1987 cut a window into the foam and turned cushioning into a design feature you could see. This shoe drops that idea into skateboarding, where impact is the whole problem: a signature SB silhouette carrying a visible Air unit, finished in Black White so the window and the Swoosh read as graphic rather than decorative. Nike SB has always been the part of the company that has to earn its place rather than assume it, which is why its shoes tend to be argued about on their construction before anything else.
First recipe: skate standard, loose carpenter denim stacked over the toe, a heavyweight white tee, a black hooded layer, so the shoe reads as part of a black and white block. Second: cleaner and slimmer, black work trousers with a short break, a grey knit, letting the white midsole and Air window sit as the only detail. It suits actual board time, long city days and anything with repeated impact, which is where the Air unit earns its keep. Size true and lace tight through the mid foot for board feel. Clean the white sole wall with a damp cloth and mild soap before dirt sets, and keep the black suede or leather panels away from soaking wet conditions where you can.
Nike SB has never had a frictionless relationship with the culture it sells into. In 2005 the imprint used Minor Threat's album artwork on a tour flyer without permission, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, and Nike apologised and settled. That episode is part of why SB product is read closely by the people who buy it. The wider context is the same one that made Nike a street brand in the first place: from the 1980s onward, Air Max and Air Force models moved out of sport and into urban and hip hop dress, and skate absorbed the same shoes on its own terms. A Black White SB with a visible Air unit is that history in its most usable form.
The build is set up for landings. A visible Air unit sits in the heel of the midsole, doing the job it has done since Nike put the chamber on display, while the upper is cut in a Black White split so the toe, panel and Swoosh separate clearly at speed. Skate builds live or die on the toe box and the ollie patch, so treat the black panelling as the working surface and the white as the part that will age first. The rubber outsole descends from the waffle logic Bowerman started with, patterned for grip rather than for court traction. Expect a stiffer initial feel than a lifestyle Dunk, softening as the Air and the upper break in.
