Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 September 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/University Red/Hot Curry/Game Royal. Hot Curry with Game Royal is one of those Dunk pairings that should not work and does: a warm mustard gold against a strong blue, complementary colours pushed to their limit on a shoe whose entire purpose is two tone contrast. The Dunk Low exists in this form because Nike discovered its basketball shapes were more valuable as colour vehicles than as equipment, the same way Air Force 1s became status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s while barely being used on court. Strip a Dunk of colour and there is nothing left. Give it a good pairing and there is nothing else you need.
Two outfits. Dark indigo denim with a plain navy or white tee, letting the gold panels be the only warm element and the blue tie back to the jeans. Or invert it: khaki or olive trousers with a blue overshirt, so the curry tone reads as part of an earth palette. This is a daytime, dry weather shoe and it fights hard against anything formal. Dunks fit slightly snug through the midfoot, so size true and lace loosely at first. Clean the light panels before dirt sets, use a mild foam rather than solvent on coloured leather, and keep them off wet grass.
The Dunk owes its second life to skateboarding and Nike SB, a division whose own history includes a public misstep in 2005 over Minor Threat album art and a subsequent apology, and to the wider return of 1980s Nike silhouettes in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure dress. Colour blocking is the reason people collect this model rather than any single one of its releases. A curry and royal pair belongs to the more adventurous side of that catalogue, the ones bought because the combination is interesting rather than because the shoe is safe.
Leather panel construction on the Dunk Low last, with contrast leather on the Swoosh, eyestay, collar and heel against the base colour, a foam midsole and the rubber outsole with the circular pivot pattern. No visible Air unit, so the shoe is light, flat and firm underfoot, which is why the Dunk works better for long walking than its bulkier cousins. Warm gold leather shows dirt at the toe faster than dark tones and the blue holds its finish longer, so the two halves of the shoe age at different rates. Break in takes about a week for the leather to crease at the flex point, and after that the shape is set.
