LX is the code Nike uses when a shoe gets a materials upgrade rather than a new idea, and this women's Dunk Low, style code FJ2260 004, spends its entire budget on texture. Dark team red is deep enough to read as burgundy in most light, and croc embossing gives the panels a raised, reptilian surface that belongs to handbags and dress shoes rather than to basketball courts. Nike is not a stranger to that world: it owned the dress shoe brand Cole Haan from 1988 until selling it in 2013, a long period of the company being fluent in leather goods. A croc embossed Dunk is that fluency reappearing on a sneaker.
Recipe one: black tailored trousers, a black knit and a burgundy leather bag, letting the shoe's texture read as an accessory choice rather than sportswear. Recipe two: dark indigo straight jeans with a camel coat and a cream knit, where the deep red warms up the neutrals. Keep other textures plain, since embossing competes badly with pattern. Embossed leather is pressed rather than printed, so the pattern has genuine relief and catches light along its ridges, which is why a dark colour works better here than a bright one: the texture provides the contrast that colour usually would. On this pair the embossing runs across the overlays and Swoosh where the panels are largest and the effect reads clearly. Underneath is the standard Dunk Low platform, a stitched upper, padded collar, foam midsole with no visible air unit and a rubber outsole with a pivot circle, so nothing about the ride changes. The women's last runs slightly narrower through the midfoot. Embossed surfaces crease along the toe like any leather, but the texture hides it well.
