Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 April 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Photon Dust/White/Vintage Green. The Air Max arrived in 1987 and changed what a sneaker was allowed to look like, because it put the pressurised Nike Air unit on display and made the cushioning itself into design. Once Nike learned that engineering could be decoration, everything in the catalogue became fair game for reinterpretation, including its older, plainer shapes. This Retro SE reads exactly that way: Photon Dust, a soft warm grey, sitting against Vintage Green, a colour named to sound already aged. Nothing here is trying to look new. The Dunk Low is being dressed as an object that has been around, which is a very specific kind of confidence from a brand that spent its early years trying to look faster than everyone else.
Two fits. One, soft neutrals: oatmeal trousers, a washed green overshirt, a white tee, so the shoe's two tones repeat in the clothes and the whole outfit reads like a single faded photograph. Two, contrast: black straight leg denim and a navy crewneck, letting Photon Dust do the lifting. These suit long walks, weekends and dry season city days. Do not over clean them. Brush gently, spot treat marks, and let the midsole keep its warm tone, because the aged look is the product. Store with paper in the toe box so the panels do not crease into hard folds.
Nike's own history is the deepest catalogue in sport, and retro colouring is how the brand sells memory to people who were not there. That memory runs through Steve Prefontaine, Bowerman's pupil at Oregon and the first track endorser, whose statue stands at Nike headquarters and who made running look like attitude rather than exercise. It runs through the 1980s and 1990s, when Nike models became mainstream youth dress and then returned as 2000s casual staples. A shoe finished to look pre owned is Nike telling you that the past is the most valuable material it holds, and that it can sell you the patina without the wait.
SE in the name means the make up has been given extra treatment beyond a standard release, and on a Retro Dunk that usually shows in texture and tone rather than in the shape, which is unchanged: low collar, big panels, flat and stable underfoot. Aged tones need clean panel separation to work, and the Dunk Low provides it, letting the grey and the green stay distinct instead of blurring into each other. Grip descends from the waffle sole Bowerman built in a kitchen, so dry traction is good and wet tile is not. Vintage toned midsoles are meant to look warm, so resist bleaching them back to white.
