Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 August 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Sail/Neutral Grey/Magenta. This pair belongs to the numbered Off-White series that treated Nike's catalogue as raw material, breaking each silhouette down and reassembling it as a labelled object, with each release counted as a lot out of fifty. The Dunk was a natural target: a plain two panel basketball shoe from the era when Nike had already taken about half the US athletic market by 1980, designed to be recoloured forever and therefore perfect for someone who wanted to take one apart. Lot 45 of 50 is a serial number as much as a colourway, and buying it means buying a position in a set rather than simply a shoe.
Two ways. Considered: black tailored trousers with a break at the ankle and a plain knit, letting the exposed construction be the only detail in the outfit. Street: loose faded denim, a graphic tee, laces run loose in the way this series encourages, which turns the shoe into the centre of the look. Dunks fit long and narrow, so most people size down half. Decide honestly whether you are wearing or holding this pair, because scuffed edges on a deconstructed upper cannot be restored, and store it flat in the box, out of sunlight, with the paper stuffing left in the toe.
Nike spent decades becoming a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion before designers started borrowing it back, and this series is the clearest example of the reverse flow: a fashion label using Nike's archive as its vocabulary and Nike gaining a new audience in the exchange. The company has been comfortable in that trade for years, working with artists such as Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022 and buying the virtual sneaker studio RTFKT in December 2021. A numbered lot in a fifty piece set is the collector logic of that world made explicit: scarcity, sequence, and a shoe that is partly a receipt.
The base is a Dunk Low: leather panels, padded collar, long structural Swoosh, flat court sole. What a deconstruction project changes is the surface treatment, the stitching, the exposed edges and the labelling, so the shoe reads as a diagram of itself. Nike's underlying engineering is older and plainer than the concept on top of it, going back to the waffle outsole that Bill Bowerman made by pouring rubber into a waffle iron. Handle this pair as a finishing sensitive item: no soaking, no machine, a barely damp cloth on panels and a dry brush on the midsole. Keep tags and extra laces together, since with numbered releases the accessories are part of the object.
