Designed by Peter Moore and released on 14 December 2018 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Voltage Purple/Court Purple-Voltage Purple colourway. Purple Lobster continues a shop led series that began as a regional joke and turned into one of the most recognisable naming conventions in skate footwear. Each entry keeps the format and changes the colour, which is why the series works: once people know the rule, the variation carries all the meaning. Purple is the version that pushes furthest from anything you would find on a plate. Nike SB gave Concepts real authorship here rather than a logo placement, and the shoe is built around the shop's idea instead of around a marketing calendar, which is unusual for a company of this size.
Faded black jeans with a grey hooded sweatshirt is the natural version, and white crew socks pulled up finish it properly. For something less obviously skate, charcoal trousers with a black knit turns the purple into a texture rather than a statement. Dry days only, since napped panels take water marks and keep them. Sizing follows the Dunk last, long through the toe, half down for most and true to size for board feel. Brush after each wear rather than saving it for a deep clean.
Nike is a company whose names have often come from inside rather than from an agency: the company itself was named by employee Jeff Johnson, and the Swoosh was drawn by a graphic design student, Carolyn Davidson, before being registered as a trademark on 22 January 1974. That tolerance for names that stick by accident runs all the way down to a skate shop calling a shoe after a crustacean and Nike letting it become a series. It is a small thing that tells you how much of this brand was built by people who were not asked to build it.
An SB Dunk built for skating: a heavily padded tongue and collar to take impact, a Zoom Air insole underfoot and a rubber cupsole with skate specific tread. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed into the sole, and in SB it is tuned to survive landings rather than to be displayed. Purple in this series is carried by napped and textured panels, and the series has a habit of hiding detail in the lining, the insole and the extras in the box. Brush the nap dry and in one direction, never soak it, and expect the colour to lighten wherever the panel abrades against grip tape.
