    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 May 2015 as part of Nike's Dunk Low line. This release has a suede upper in Safari/Altitude Green/Baroque Brown. Nike SB building a Dunk around De La Soul is the brand's music relationship at its most respectful, which matters because that relationship has not always been. Nike used the Beatles' Revolution in 1987 after paying Capitol Records without Apple Records' approval, was sued and pulled the ads in March 1988, and Nike SB later appropriated Minor Threat's 1981 album artwork in 2005, drawing a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology. A collaboration with a named group is the corrected version of that instinct: credit rather than borrowing. The Dunk itself is the right canvas because skateboarding rescued it from obsolescence, and skate culture and hip hop have never been strangers to each other.
A collaboration Dunk is bought to be recognised, so keep the fit uncluttered. First recipe: cuffed loose denim with a plain heavyweight tee and an unzipped hoodie, hems short enough that the panelling reads when you walk. Second: black work trousers with a knit and a bomber, letting the shoe carry all the colour. Do not stack it with graphic heavy tops, because two references cancel out. Casual daytime and evening. If you skate them, expect the ollie panel to go first and buy accordingly. Clean by hand with a soft brush, protect suede with a repellent before the first wear, and never machine wash a padded skate build.
Music has been the flashpoint in Nike's cultural history more often than sport has. The Revolution lawsuit and the Minor Threat apology are the two documented failures, and they are instructive because both involved taking artwork or recordings without the artists' consent. From the other direction, Nike's presence in hip hop was never engineered: it happened because the 1984 Michael Jordan signing and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made the brand the language of basketball, and basketball and hip hop shared the same rooms. A named group collaboration on an SB Dunk closes that loop properly, with the artists inside the project rather than discovering it afterwards.
SB Dunks are built differently from standard Dunks in the places a skater feels. The tongue is thicker and more heavily padded, the collar carries extra foam, and the insole is tuned for repeated impact, because the same panel takes the abuse of every failed trick. Underneath, the flat court outsole geometry stays, which is precisely what gives board feel, and Nike's founding waffle logic from Bowerman's kitchen is why the brand treats tread pattern as design rather than default. Music themed SB pairs concentrate their work in material choices, colour blocking and small graphic details across those panels. Since the interest lives in the details, keep them clean and keep suede away from water.
