Culture Note™
Released on 22 May 2024 and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has a canvas upper in Bleached Aqua/Geode Teal/White. Futura is Leonard McGurr, the New York writer who came up alongside Basquiat and Keith Haring and pushed graffiti's spray-can vocabulary into gallery work. His first Nike SB Dunk was the 2004 FLOM, a Dunk High built for the opening of his Futura Laboratories store in Fukuoka, printed with world currencies and produced in roughly two dozen friends-and-family pairs that now sell through auction houses for tens of thousands of dollars. Bleached Aqua, style code HF6061-400, is the twentieth-anniversary answer to that shoe, and this time it is a Dunk Low that people could actually buy. The graphic is not a generic splatter: it comes from Futura's 1991 Colorforms painting, printed onto canvas overlays, so you are wearing a specific piece from his catalogue.
Colorforms is a busy graphic, so let it be the loudest thing you have on. Recipe one: washed white or ecru wide-leg denim, a plain white tee, a low white sock, so the aqua and teal register as the only color in the fit. Recipe two: black cargos and a grey hoodie at night, so the 3M silver heels light up and the translucent outsole finishes it. On sizing, SB Dunks run true to size, but the thick tongue and collar padding make them snug, so wide feet should take a half size up. For care, treat the printed canvas overlays gently. No machine, no soaking. Soft brush, mild soap, cool water, blot rather than scrub across the artwork, and keep the pair out of long direct sun so the aqua holds.
Futura is one of very few artists whose Nike work crosses from sneaker culture into auction houses, and the FLOM Dunk High has moved through Sotheby's, which is not a sentence you can write about most collaborations. That history is exactly what makes Bleached Aqua matter. It carries the DNA of a friends-and-family grail in a pair that shipped through skate shops and SNKRS, so it is the accessible way into a lineage most people can only look at behind glass. It also landed when SB Dunks were being judged on story rather than pure hype, and a graphic pulled from a 1991 canvas is about as much story as the silhouette can hold.
The build is layered rather than printed flat. A white mesh base keeps the shoe breathable and skate-ready, and the Colorforms artwork lives on canvas overlays stacked on top of it, which is why the graphic has depth instead of looking like a decal. A dark teal Swoosh anchors the side panels. Reflective 3M silver takes the heel counters, so the pair changes character entirely under headlights or a camera flash. Futura's signature sits on the lateral heel with FL branding on the medial side, and the tongue tags carry co-branding set in his own font. The white midsole is stitched in blue, and the icy translucent outsole shows his signature through it. Blue two-toned laces come fitted, with a purple spare set and special packaging in the box.
