Designed by Peter Moore and released on 13 February 2014 as part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the Legion Pine/Kumquat-Flat Opal colourway. Nike SB has always been better at colour than the main line, because skate colourways have to survive being looked at closely by people who are sceptical of the brand. Legion Pine with Kumquat is a good example of what that produces: a deep forest green cut with a warm orange, a pairing that does not come from a team, a season or a sport. It comes from the same instinct that made Bill Bowerman pour rubber into a waffle iron, which is a willingness to try the combination nobody asked for. The Dunk Low is the right chassis for it because the panel blocking gives two strong colours somewhere clean to sit.
Green and orange is a strong pairing, so give it one partner and no more. Recipe one: washed black denim, a cream tee, a green cap, so the Kumquat accent is the only warm thing in the outfit. Recipe two: brown or tan corduroy trousers, an off white knit, which picks up the orange and lets the pine green work as the neutral. Casual, daytime, and genuinely skateable. Size true to your usual Dunk, and note the padded tongue makes it bulkier than the standard shoe. Brush suede panels dry rather than wetting them, keep the pair out of rain, and accept that skating will destroy the toe first.
Nike's entry into skate was not welcomed, and the company's own record explains why. Nike SB's 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's 1981 album art for a tour flyer drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, and Nike apologised on 27 June 2005 and settled out of court. That history is why SB releases tend to be judged on execution rather than on the Swoosh, and why colour work like this matters more here than elsewhere in the catalogue. The broader context is Nike's absorption into mainstream American youth dress from the 1980s onward, first through basketball and hip hop, later through everything else.
A low cut skate build on the Dunk's flat rubber cupsole, with SB specific padding where a skater takes impact, most obviously a thicker tongue and a more cushioned collar than a standard Dunk. Legion Pine carries the main panels with Kumquat as the accent, a dark against warm pairing that hides scuffing better than any pale colourway of this shoe. The flat wide outsole is why the silhouette was adopted for skating in the first place: it gives a direct read of the board with minimal compression. Expect a firm ride, a snug midfoot that relaxes with wear, and abrasion at the ollie area if you actually skate in the pair.
