Nike SB Dunk Low Pro Corduroy

Fit one: brown or tan corduroy is a winter material, so run it with heavy denim and a flannel shirt, matching texture to texture rather than fighting it. Fit two: charcoal wool trousers with a plain crewneck, where the ribbed upper adds the only surface interest in an otherwise flat outfit. Skate them if you want, but corduroy shreds faster than suede on grip tape, so buy accordingly. Sizing follows the Dunk last, slim through the midfoot, so wide feet go half up. Clean dry: a soft brush along the direction of the cord, never against it, and never soak the upper, because wet corduroy dries stiff and the pile flattens permanently.

Skate footwear became fashion footwear because skating was already a graphic and musical culture before it was a shoe market, and Nike SB spent years learning to speak to it rather than at it. The line's worst moment was its 2005 appropriation of Minor Threat's album art, which drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, an apology from Nike on 27 June 2005 and a settlement out of court. Material led releases like a corduroy Dunk are the quieter path the line took afterwards: no borrowed imagery, no appropriated iconography, just an unusual fabric on a shape everybody already trusts. It is a collectible built out of texture rather than out of somebody else's artwork.

Corduroy behaves differently from leather and you should know that before wearing. The ribbed pile catches light along its direction, so the panels shift tone as you move, and it holds dust in the channels between cords rather than on the surface. It creases softly instead of folding into hard lines, which flatters the Dunk's toe box. Underneath, the SB Pro build is unchanged: a thick padded tongue that absorbs lace pressure, extra collar foam around the ankle, and a cushioned insole tuned for landings. The outsole traction pattern descends from the founding piece of Nike engineering, the waffle sole Bowerman poured in his wife's waffle iron, which was always about grip before anything else.
