Designed by Peter Moore and part of Nike's Dunk SB line. This release has the varsity blue/pink ice colourway. Varsity Blue with Pink Ice comes from the era when Nike SB was still working out what its colour language would be, borrowing collegiate blue and then undercutting it with a soft pink that no basketball team would have signed off. That willingness to break the sport codes is what made the SB Dunk a collector object rather than a skate shoe with a Swoosh. Nike had already spent twenty years proving that a shoe could mean something outside the arena, ever since its models became status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion during the 1980s. The SB line simply pointed that lesson at a smaller and more sceptical audience.
Two builds. One, sport tinted: mid wash denim, a white tee, a navy zip up, so the varsity blue reads as team colour and the pink as the joke it was meant to be. Two, softer: grey trousers, a washed pink or cream knit, white socks, letting the two tones repeat above and below. Best in dry weather and considered wear rather than daily skating, given the pale accents. Brush after each outing, clean marks the day they appear, use a gentle foam cleaner rather than bleach on the light panels, and keep them boxed away from sun so the pink does not shift.
The SB Dunk turned into a currency. Once Nike's silhouettes had become mainstream American youth dress through basketball, hip hop and then 1990s and 2000s casual wear, the scarcity of a skate line release made colourways into a language collectors could speak fluently, naming shoes by their palette rather than their model number. Just Do It, from 1988, works as a brand device more than a slogan for exactly this reason: the Swoosh no longer needs to explain itself. A blue and pink Dunk from the SB catalogue is understood on sight by people who have never stood on a board.
Skate specification on a Dunk Low means padding where a basketball shoe never needed it: a thick tongue and collar to survive tight lacing and repeated impact, and more cushioning under the heel. The outline stays the classic low top, so it still sits close to the floor with a flat waffle style outsole in the tradition Bowerman began in a kitchen. Two tone releases like this one rely on the Dunk's clean panel breaks, which keep the pale pink from bleeding into the blue visually. Pink accents mark quickly, so the toe and Swoosh areas need attention with a soft brush after each wear.
