Released on 6 March 2025 and part of Nike's Air Max DN8 line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Metallic Dark Grey/Iron Grey. Every Air Max argument since 1987 has been about how much of the cushioning you are allowed to see. Nike Air is a pressurised gas unit sealed inside the midsole, and the Air Max line exists because someone decided to cut the foam open and let the technology be the styling. The DN8 is the newest chapter of that idea, and it wears its unit as architecture rather than as a window. This is the women's pattern in Black with Metallic Dark Grey, the most severe way the model can be finished: a dark base with a cold metallic sheen through the panels, so the shoe reads structural rather than sporty. Black and metallic grey suit sharp, dark styling. First: black wide leg trousers with a puddle hem, a fitted black long sleeve, and the metallic catching light as the only ornament. Second: dark grey track pants, an oversized bomber and a slick back, an evening fit where the shoe reads like hardware. It is a city and travel shoe rather than a training one, comfortable for long walking days on hard surfaces. Women's sizing runs narrow, so size up half for a wide forefoot. Wipe metallic panels with a barely damp microfibre cloth in one direction, avoid alcohol based cleaners which strip the coating, and let them air dry away from heat.
Air Max is Nike's most public technology because it is the one you can point at. From the 1980s the brand became a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, with Air Max models joining Air Force 1s and Air Jordans as staples of mainstream American youth dress, then returning through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. That history is why a new Air Max lands as a fashion object first and a running shoe second. A black metallic finish is Nike playing to that audience directly, aimed at people who want the visible cushioning silhouette without the neon vocabulary the line is usually associated with.
The upper is a mix of engineered mesh and synthetic overlays, with the Metallic Dark Grey doing the work of catching light where a brighter colourway would use contrast. Underfoot sits Nike Air, the sealed pressurised gas cushioning the whole line is named for, carried in a tall, sculpted midsole that gives the shoe its stance. The women's last is narrower through the heel with a lower instep than the standard pattern, so lockdown comes from fit rather than from added straps. Black hides city dirt but metallic finishes show fingerprints and water spotting, which is the maintenance trade you accept here. Clean it in strokes rather than circles, or the sheen goes patchy.
