The Glide is NOCTA's answer to a question Nike has been asking since Bill Bowerman started cutting weight out of running shoes in Oregon: how little shoe can you get away with. It is a slim, low profile build with a wrapping upper rather than a stacked, panelled one, and Bright Crimson turns the whole thing into a single block of colour so the shape reads before anything else does. Red has always been the loudest thing in Nike's palette, the colour it reserves for product it wants seen. Style code DM0879 600 identifies this pairing. This is the sub label using performance language for a shoe that lives entirely in street clothing.
Full crimson is a statement, so keep everything else flat. Wear it with black nylon track trousers and a black hoodie so the shoe is the only colour, or with grey sweatpants and a white tee for a warmer weather version where the red still leads but the outfit stays soft. It suits weekends, gigs and travel, and it will fight any patterned garment you own. Slim silhouettes run narrow, so try it with the socks you actually wear and size up if your foot is wide. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, avoid soaking a bright dye, and keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight to stop the crimson fading.
Nike sub labels are the modern version of the crossover the brand pulled off in the 1980s, when the Michael Jordan signing of 1984 and the Spike Lee directed Mars Blackmon advertising made Nike the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, of hip hop. From there the brand's product became a status symbol in urban fashion and then a fixture of mainstream youth dress, before returning through 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks. Building a label whose product is athletic in form but never intended for sport is Nike acknowledging that this audience, not the competitive one, defines what the brand looks like now.
A close fitting upper over a low profile sole is the whole idea, which puts the emphasis on how the shoe holds the foot rather than on how much material is stacked underneath it. Nike has been developing that approach for years, most explicitly with Flywire, where cables secure the foot so the upper can be reduced to almost nothing. A tonal crimson execution hides seams and highlights silhouette, so the shoe looks lower and longer than a panelled sneaker of the same size. Expect a snug entry and a sock like feel through the midfoot, and expect the bright dye to be the part that needs protecting from sun and scuffing.
