Evergreen Glacier is the sixth generation Cloud carrying the only kind of colour a Swiss engineering brand ever really commits to: a deep forest green against a cold pale tone, landscape rather than fashion. The Cloud is On's foundation model, descended from the 2012 Cloudracer raced by Swiss triathlete Nicola Spirig, and it is the shoe that took the company from about 6,000 retailers in 55 countries in 2019 to a global business. Green is a hard colour to sell in running, which is why it usually appears on the models confident enough to carry it. On a Cloud 6 it works because the silhouette is low ornament and the sole does all the talking.
Forest green sits naturally against denim and earth tones. Recipe one: mid blue jeans, a cream knit and a tan jacket, where the green shoe reads as the considered choice rather than the safe one. Recipe two: black joggers and a charcoal quarter zip, letting the evergreen tone break an otherwise flat dark outfit. Use them for daily running, commuting, walking and travel, and skip them for muddy ground where the pale sole edge will suffer. Fit true to size, snug midfoot, light forefoot. Brush the sole edge clean after wet wear, air the upper between uses, and clear the pod cavities weekly so the underfoot feel stays lively.
On's cultural meaning came from endurance sport first and design second. The company grew out of triathlon and road running, sponsors the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein and built bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics, then widened dramatically after Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and The Roger arrived as a limited edition in July 2020. What settled out is a brand people wear because it looks engineered. A deep green Cloud is for the buyer who wants that engineering with one degree of personality, without moving into a colourway that dates itself in a season.
The visible pods are the mechanism, not decoration. On engineers foam into specialised geometries so the cavities compress horizontally as well as vertically, absorbing impact and supporting the foot in multiple directions as it rolls through, which is why the ride feels soft on landing and firm at push off. The sixth generation Cloud sits on the light and responsive side of the range rather than the maximal side. Evergreen keeps daily marks invisible on the upper while the glacier tone on the sole shows the cavity structure clearly. Clean the pale sole edge with a soft brush and mild foam, and keep grit from packing into the pods.
