Origin
Released on 23 December 2021 and part of the Adilette line. This release has a textile upper in Core Black/Off White/Core Black. The Adilette is the shoe adidas made so athletes had something to put on between the pitch and the shower, and it has stayed almost unchanged for decades because there is very little to improve. The 2.0 modernises the proportions without touching the idea. Handing it to Pharrell Williams, one of the designer collaborators adidas has worked with longest, is a joke about restraint: the least designed product in the catalogue given to someone with strong opinions about design. Black with White is the answer, which is the most Adilette answer possible. There is nothing to look at except the strap, the stripes and the footbed, and that reduction is exactly what a collaborator with taste does with an object this simple.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. First, the honest way: pool, gym, home, worn barefoot and rinsed under a tap without a second thought. Second, styled: black shorts or track pants with a white crew sock and a plain tee, where the black and white scheme is doing deliberate work rather than being an afterthought. Best in heat, monsoon, travel and anywhere you take shoes off often. Slides run large, so a half size down from your trainer size is the usual advice. Rinse in cold water, wipe the footbed since the contour holds grit, dry out of direct sun which hardens the material, and keep them out of hot car interiors where the base warps.
Influence
adidas has repeatedly had its most functional products taken up as clothing, from the Superstar leaving the NBA for hip hop after Run-DMC released My Adidas in 1986 and signed the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company, to the Stan Smith becoming European daily wear. The slide is the current front of that process, moving from locker room to street to editorial. Pharrell Williams working on one is the modern seal on that shift: a musician and designer treating a shower sandal as a legitimate product rather than as an accessory. That is a very adidas outcome, since the company has never chosen which of its products would matter.
Construction
A slide is a two problem object: the strap has to hold the foot without pressure points and the footbed has to stay grippy when wet. The Adilette solves both with a moulded strap and a contoured footbed shaped to the arch, so it stays comfortable far longer than a flat slab of foam would. The Three Stripes across the strap are moulded rather than applied, which is why they survive years of chlorine, shower floors and sun. Black across the strap and base with White stripes and detailing is the highest contrast version of the shoe and the one that reads as sportswear rather than as a fashion object. It is light, it dries fast, and there is nothing on it to break.
