    Culture Note™

Released on 4 November 2020 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Core Black/Silver Metallic/Grey Four. The Gazelle is one of the shoes that carried adidas out of sport and into everyday European dressing, a low suede trainer whose appeal is that it does almost nothing except sit well on the foot. Handing it to Star Wars, and specifically to the Darksaber, gives that plain shape a very specific reference to hang on. The Darksaber is a black bladed weapon in that universe, which means this is a dark, low light execution rather than a bright character shoe, and that is the right instinct. adidas has always been willing to let outside partners rewrite its archive, from designers like Yohji Yamamoto and Raf Simons to properties from far outside fashion.
A dark themed suede shoe is far easier to wear than most collaboration product. Recipe one: black straight jeans with a charcoal knit and dark socks, so the collaboration details are only visible up close and the shoe reads as a plain dark trainer. Recipe two: olive or navy trousers with a grey sweatshirt, a slightly softer build where the suede texture carries the outfit. Suede is the weak point: spray it with a protector before the first wear, brush with a crepe brush in one direction, and never let it dry near heat after getting wet. Keep the heel and tongue hits clean with a soft brush rather than a cloth.
adidas learned early that its shoes gain meaning when other people write on them. Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid in 1986, then held their shell toes up at Madison Square Garden, and the endorsement that followed was the first between a musical act and an athletic company, a moment Questlove has called hip hop's tipping point. That established the archive as a shared surface. Since then adidas has opened it to fashion designers including Stella McCartney from 2004, Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, and to entertainment properties. A Star Wars Gazelle belongs to fandom rather than to sport, and its restraint is what makes it wearable outside a convention.
The Gazelle build is a low suede upper with a slim profile, a soft collar and a flat outsole, made so the shoe can be worn all day without asking anything of you. Suede is the key material, because it takes dark dyes with real depth and gives a matte surface that suits a colourway built around a black blade reference. The Three Stripes run the quarters as structural banding, which adidas has used since buying the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952, and on a dark upper they read as tonal channels rather than as contrast. Collaboration hits will sit on the tongue, heel and insole rather than across the panels, which keeps the silhouette clean.
