Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 June 2021 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Gym Red/White/Black colourway. The Air Jordan 1's original red and white palette is the most quoted colour arrangement in footwear, and a Flip is exactly what the name says: the same colours, redistributed. Where the original puts red on the overlays against a white ground, this women's Low inverts the relationship so the eye has to relearn a shoe it already knows. That is only possible because the 1984 Michael Jordan signing turned into a business of its own, giving Nike a design language stable enough that reversing it counts as a statement. There is nothing new here. The whole point is that you notice what has moved.
Red and white is loud, so keep everything else plain. Recipe one: black straight-leg jeans, a white tee and a black leather jacket, a hard frame that lets the red do all the talking. Recipe two: cream wide-leg trousers, an oversized white shirt and a red-free knit, where the shoe is the only saturated object in a soft outfit. The women's Air Jordan 1 Low runs slightly narrow, so go up rather than down if you are between sizes. Protect before wear, never let the red panels sit damp against the white, clean the two colours separately with different cloths, and use trees so the low toe box does not collapse.
The Air Jordan carried Nike out of sport and into culture, helped by Spike Lee, who directed the advertising and appeared in it as Mars Blackmon, and by a decade in which Nike's court shoes became staples of mainstream American youth dress and the backbone of hip hop's relationship with footwear. Carry one correction with you: the NBA never banned the Air Jordan 1. The shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship, and Nike paid the fines. A Flip of the classic colours works because that mythology made the original arrangement so familiar that the reversal registers instantly.
The Low is stitched leather panels over a flat, wide cupsole, with toe box perforations, a foam-padded collar cut below the ankle bone and a heel panel carrying the branding. Because the collar sits low, break-in is quick and creasing arrives early at the flex point, which is characteristic of the construction rather than a flaw. Nike Air underpins the family as a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, hidden here rather than exposed as it became on the 1987 Air Max, so the ride is firm and flat. On a two-tone red and white build, panel edges are everything, since any dye transfer between the colours shows immediately at the stitch line.
