Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 December 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Rattan/Sail/Desert Camo. Rattan is a pale, slightly greyed tan named after woven cane furniture, and it is one of the colours Jordan Brand uses when it wants a shoe to look domestic rather than athletic. On the women's Jordan 1 Low it produces the quietest version of a very loud silhouette. The shape goes back to Peter Moore's 1985 design, the shoe that sold out its first fifty thousand pairs, and the Low is the cut that let that pattern become a daily object rather than a court shoe. In a soft neutral, with the collar cut away, almost nothing about it announces itself except the outline, which for a lot of wearers is exactly the appeal.
Neutral on neutral is the natural move: cream wide leg trousers, an oatmeal knit and no hard colour anywhere, letting the shoe complete a tonal outfit. For contrast, wear it with black slim trousers and a white shirt so the tan reads as the only warm point. Both suit the low cut, which sits cleanly under a hemmed or cropped trouser. Size true to your usual sneaker size. Care is the whole job with this colour: spray a protector before the first wear, clean marks the same day with a soft brush and a little mild soap, keep it away from dark raw denim, and store it boxed.
The Jumpman is a house mark now rather than a team logo, and colours like this are how it entered wardrobes that own nothing else from the line. Jordan Brand's design collaborations with Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior and Comme des Garcons made a neutral Jordan 1 a legitimate fashion object, while its signed athletes, including WNBA players Maya Moore and Jordin Canada, keep the sport half of the brand credible. A pale Low sits deliberately at the calm end of a line whose reputation was built on transgression, and that contrast is precisely what makes it easy to wear anywhere.
The Low keeps the Jordan 1 panel layout and the Wings mark, with the ankle left free and the weight kept down. Underfoot is a flat rubber cupsole with a firm, grounded ride and no visible Air unit, since that cushioning entered the line from the Air Jordan II onward. In a pale neutral, the panel edges and stitching become the only visual detail, so the shoe lives or dies on how clean it is. Rattan is the least forgiving family of colours in this catalogue: it marks quickly, picks up dye transfer from dark denim and greys at the toe. Protect it before the first wear and clean it after every few outings rather than seasonally.
