    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White/Red. Black Toe is one of the oldest colour blocks the brand has, the arrangement where black caps the toe against white and red on a shoe otherwise built around the Chicago palette. Putting it on a slip on Low is the brand asking whether the colour block or the construction is what people actually recognise, and the answer is the colour block. The 1 was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore in 1984 for a rookie Nike signed because it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own. Four decades later the block is worth more than the sport it came from.
Recipe one: black cropped trousers, a white shirt, and a red lip or a red bag, so the outfit repeats the shoe's three colours in a different order. Recipe two: light blue denim, a black tee, and a white utility jacket, letting the shoe be the only patterned thing you are wearing. No visible socks with a slip on Low, or a no show sock at most, since a visible sock cuts the line the collar makes. Try before buying if you have a high instep. Wipe the white and red panels regularly, treat the black toe last so you do not drag black dye across white, and air dry only.
This is the block from the era that made the line famous, when Nike leaned into the NBA's uniform rule requiring shoes to be at least 51 percent white and built the Banned advertising around paying the fine rather than complying. Be precise about it: the league never banned the Air Jordan I, and the shoe cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before this model reached the public in April 1985. That campaign taught the sneaker market that transgression sells, and everything from limited releases to resale queues descends from it. The black, white and red arrangement is the visual shorthand for that whole period.
Slip means no functional lacing, so the shoe relies on an elastic or gusseted entry and on the shape of the collar to hold your foot. That trades adjustability for speed, and it means fit is binary: it either matches your instep height or it does not, with no way to compensate. The Black Toe blocking is doing the visual work, splitting the upper into three zones so the shoe still reads as a 1 without the lace row to guide the eye. Women's sizing runs narrower through the midfoot. Because there is no lace tension holding the heel, expect a little slip at first and check for rubbing at the collar before committing to a long day.
