Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 April 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Particle Grey/White. Shadow is the grey and black reading of the Air Jordan 1, and it is one of the few non Chicago palettes that has become a name in its own right. The 1 was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for a Bulls rookie Nike signed in October 1984, and released to the public on 1 April 1985. Everything after that has been variation on those panels. This women's Mid takes the grey on black arrangement and puts it on the collar height that most people actually wear, high enough to hold the ankle, low enough to sit under a trouser hem. Style code BQ6472 007.
Shadow is a neutral, so use it as one. First: black wide leg trousers cropped at the ankle, a grey knit, silver jewellery, letting the two greys stack. Second: mid blue denim with a straight leg, an oversized white shirt, black socks so the collar reads as part of the shoe. Occasion is anything short of formal: office, dinner, travel. Fit runs true to size on the women's last, narrow at the midfoot, so size up a half if you wear thick socks. Care: a soft brush for the perforated toe, a damp cloth for the grey panels, and a conditioner twice a season, since grey leather dulls before it dirties.
The 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, and Shadow is where that culture went once the loud colourways were spoken for. The Banned advertising, built on the NBA's uniform rule requiring at least 51 percent white and Nike's willingness to pay the 5,000 dollar per game fine, established that this shape carries an attitude regardless of colour. Spike Lee, directing and playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, gave the shoe a voice; rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z kept it in the language. Grey on black is the version you wear when you want the reference without the announcement.
Leather across the whole upper, with the wing tip toe perforated, the Swoosh stitched as a separate panel and the collar padded and cut just below the ankle bone. The grey and black split is done by panel, not by print, so the two tones stay crisp as the leather creases. A rubber cupsole with a forefoot pivot circle carries the shoe. Grey leather is more forgiving than white across a commute and darker than a Chicago pair on wet pavement, which is a practical reason this colourway keeps returning. The women's last is cut slightly narrower through the midfoot than the standard men's version.
