Designed by Peter Moore and released on 6 August 2020 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a satin upper in University Red/White/Black. In 1984 Nike signed a rookie guard named Michael Jordan, and the shoe line built around him grew into a business of its own. That signing, amplified by Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon films, made Nike the shoe of basketball and, through basketball, of hip hop. The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG is the shape that started it, and this women's edition rebuilds it in satin red. Worth correcting a myth you will hear repeated in shops: the NBA never banned the Air Jordan 1. The shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship prototype, and Nike paid the fines and turned the story into advertising. Satin red keeps that swagger and swaps leather's matte weight for shine.
Two recipes. First, high contrast: black wide leg trousers with a clean break, a white shirt or a fine knit, silver jewellery, letting the satin be the only shine in the outfit. Second, tonal warmth: cream or camel, a long coat, and the red reading as the accent that stops everything looking beige. Good for evenings out and for occasions where a leather sneaker would feel too casual. High tops sit best with the top eyelet laced loose if you want ankle movement. Keep satin away from rain and rough denim rivets, spot clean with a barely damp cloth and no solvent, and stuff the shaft when storing so the collar does not slump.
From the 1980s onward Nike became a status object in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Air Jordan sat at the centre of it. The line's advertising, directed by Spike Lee and starring him as Mars Blackmon, put a basketball shoe into comedy, music and street dress at once, which is why the silhouette still reads as cultural shorthand decades later. A women's satin execution is Nike using that authority on texture rather than story, banking on the fact that the outline alone is recognisable from across a room. Red does most of the talking, and the shape supplies the credentials.
High cut collar, padded ankle, a stitched panel upper and a flat rubber cupsole: the same court blueprint Nike was building in the mid eighties, before Air became a visible design feature. What changes here is surface. Satin reflects rather than absorbs, so the red reads deeper in low light and brighter under a flash, and the panel seams show as ridges of light instead of shadow. Satin also behaves differently from leather in wear: it creases as a soft fold rather than a hard line, it snags on rough edges, and it does not scuff clean the way a tumbled hide does. Treat the toe box gently and this holds its lustre.
