Designed by Peter Moore and released on 9 November 2024 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Pollen/White. The Dunk High Retro Premium is the version of the silhouette with the full ankle collar and better materials than a general release, and it is the shape that suits a music collaboration best because there is more surface to work with. A high top has a taller panel above the ankle, a longer lace run and a bigger heel area, all of which give a graphic identity somewhere to sit. Nike's relationship with music runs deep and has not always been smooth, which makes music partnerships significant rather than routine for this company. Whatever the graphic treatment, the underlying shoe is the same panelled court high that Nike has been colouring since the 1980s.
High tops want a break in the leg line, so wear them with cropped straight trousers or cuffed denim so the collar is visible rather than swallowed. A plain black tee and a heavy overshirt keeps the attention on the shoe, which is what a graphic release is for. For a second option, run wide leg black trousers with a cream knit so the shoe reads as the only pattern in the outfit. Best for evenings, gigs and cooler weather. Dunk Highs fit true to length; lace the top two eyelets loosely if you want ankle movement. Keep premium materials dry and brush them regularly.
Music has repeatedly been the flashpoint in Nike's cultural history. The company used the Beatles' Revolution in 1987 after paying Capitol Records without approval from Apple Records, was sued for 15 million dollars and pulled the ads in March 1988, and in 2005 Nike SB's use of Minor Threat's album art drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and an apology. Against that record, an official music collaboration is a very different kind of object: permission granted, credit given. Hip hop was also the culture that made Nike a status symbol from the 1980s onward, so the relationship runs in both directions.
Premium retro versions upgrade what your hand touches: richer leather or suede on the panels, a fuller padded collar, and heavier stitching than a standard release carries. The high cut wraps the ankle, which changes both the fit and the way the shoe holds laces, so it takes a few wears to find the right tension. Underneath is the standard court arrangement of a foam midsole over a rubber outsole, following Nike's founding conviction, from Bowerman's waffle iron experiments, that the sole is engineering rather than trim. High tops crease at the ankle rather than only at the toe, so the break in pattern is different.
