Origin
Released on 15 December 2024 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Rose Sugar/Angora/Ice Wine. Rose Sugar Angora is the 9060 dressed in textiles language rather than sports language. Angora is a wool, sugar is a texture, and rose is a colour that never appeared on a serious running shoe. The 9060 itself is New Balance exaggerating its own archive, taking the panel structure and midsole geometry of the 99x runners, the family that made suburban grey into a cultural object, and swelling them into sculpture. Dressing that sculpture in soft pinks and creams completes the shift away from athletics entirely. The shape still quotes a running shoe, but nothing else about the object does, which is the most accurate description of what the 9060 is for.
Utility
Keep it soft: cream or oatmeal wide trousers, a pale knit, and a camel coat or overshirt, so the rose and angora tones read as part of a considered palette. The second recipe uses grey, charcoal trousers with a white shirt, where the warm pink lifts a cold outfit at ground level. This is a walking and travel shoe for long days rather than a training shoe, and the tall midsole wants a clean hem. Pale pink and cream demand upkeep: protect before first wear, brush dry, clean the midsole early with mild soap, and keep it well away from monsoon water, which stains at the seams permanently.
Influence
This colourway is only possible because New Balance's plainness became a design position. The 990 family turned into the archetypal American dad shoe, worn for comfort rather than status, with documented wearers including Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, and normcore then high fashion reclaimed that through the 2010s. Once the archive was fashion, the brand could distort its shapes into the 9060 and colour them like knitwear. Appointing Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis creative director of Made in USA in April 2021 formalised the same idea from the other direction, running the archive as a fashion line.
Construction
The upper layers mesh with suede and synthetic overlays across the 9060's heavily segmented panelling, with the angora cream holding the base and rose sugar tones warming the overlays so the seams read as soft steps rather than hard breaks. Underfoot New Balance uses ABZORB, its proprietary foam and rubber polymer blend that disperses heel strike impact before it travels up into the knees and hips, and the inflated midsole gives that foam real depth. It is softer and lighter than ENCAP and less structurally supportive, so expect cushioning rather than correction. Pale builds are the demanding ones to own. Take the width fitting that matches your foot, the brand's oldest technical promise, and size honestly for volume.
