    Origin

    chevron
Released on 15 October 2019 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Collegiate Navy/White/Gold Metallic. Navy is the Gazelle at its most useful. A suede training shoe with the Three Stripes running the full flank, no shell toe and no padding to speak of, rendered in a colour that behaves as a neutral in almost every wardrobe. The Gazelle's appeal has always been that it looks like nothing in particular, which is the hardest thing for a sportswear company to sell. adidas comes from a very literal tradition, Adolf Dassler making purpose built shoes in Herzogenaurach for individual events, and the Gazelle is what that tradition looks like once the event is gone and only the proportions remain.

    Utility

    chevron
Navy suede is a genuine wardrobe workhorse. Recipe one: grey flannel or charcoal trousers with a navy or cream knit, where the shoe reads as the casual end of a smart outfit without breaking it. Recipe two: raw indigo denim and a white tee, the simplest version, where navy on blue reads tonal and easy. Works year round, best in cooler and drier months since suede and monsoon do not mix. The Gazelle runs narrow and low volume, so go up half a size if your foot is wide or you wear thicker socks. Protect the suede before first wear, brush in one direction, and use a suede eraser rather than water on marks.

    Influence

    chevron
The Dassler brothers put German handmade athletic shoes on the world stage when they persuaded sprinter Jesse Owens to wear their spikes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and after the brothers split irreparably in 1947, Adolf registered adidas AG on 18 August 1949 and rebuilt the company on a single visual idea. Everything the brand does in lifestyle rests on that logo discipline. The Gazelle spread through European casual and indie dressing precisely because the Three Stripes were legible enough to signal a brand without a shoe having to shout, which is a design outcome most companies never manage.

    Construction

    chevron
Navy suede across the upper, suede Three Stripes stitched down the side, a printed logo on the quarter and a low profile sole that keeps you close to the ground. The build is deliberately minimal: little padding, a soft heel counter, and a shoe that breaks in within days and then moulds to your foot. Those stitched stripes trace back to 1952, when adidas bought the mark from Finnish maker Karhu Sports for roughly 1,600 euros and two bottles of whisky, at a time when the stripes reinforced the upper as much as they identified it. Navy suede is the most forgiving finish in the range, absorbing scuffs and dust that pale colours announce immediately.
