Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 24 May 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Gym Red/Black. Black and gym red is the pairing the whole brand rests on, and on the Mid it comes without ceremony. Nike signed Michael Jordan in October 1984 as a rookie rather than a superstar, because it was losing basketball to Converse and adidas and needed a face of its own, and the shoe that followed made black and red into a shorthand for defiance that survives in wardrobes with no relationship to the sport. The Mid is the version of Peter Moore's silhouette that most people actually wear: enough collar to look like a basketball shoe, not so much that it dictates the rest of your outfit. In this palette it is the most straightforwardly recognisable Jordan you can own.
Two recipes. First, black jeans with a black tee and a red cap, bookending the palette so the shoe looks deliberate instead of default. Second, olive cargo trousers with a grey hoodie, using an earth tone to soften a very hard colour combination. This is the Air Jordan 1 you can wear in bad weather with the least anxiety, because black hides what wet pavement does. Size true to length with a snug instep. Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, clean the white midsole separately with a soft eraser, and rotate the pair rather than wearing it daily so the sole unit recovers.
Air Jordan's history is not only marketing. In the late 1980s the shoes were associated with robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them, and that darker chapter is documented alongside the Spike Lee campaigns and the references from 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z. Black and red sits at the centre of it, because it was the colourway that signalled the shoe from across a street. Understanding that is part of understanding why this palette still carries charge decades later, long after the line became a Nike division in 1997 doing about 5.1 billion dollars a year.
The Mid height sits above the ankle bone with less structure than the OG high, and the collar is padded rather than rigid, which makes it the easiest 1 to put on and the easiest to wear under a trouser. Nike Air cushioning has been part of the line since the second model. Black over the majority of the upper is the practical decision here: road dust, rain marks and light scuffing all vanish into it, and the red panels stay brighter than they would beside white. The midsole is the only element that will visibly age, and it will do so through yellowing and scuffing rather than through failure. Brush the sole edges regularly and treat toe creasing as expected wear.
