Released on 29 November 2022 and part of On Running's Cloud X 3 line. This release has a mesh upper in Ivory/Black. Ivory Black is the Cloud X 3 in its most classical dress: pale body, dark contrast, no seasonal colour to date it. The X line is On's versatile trainer, built for days that mix running with everything else, and the third generation is where that brief settled into a shoe people use for classes and commutes as readily as for mileage. The engineering it runs on was proven in Zurich in 2010, when Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, cut a garden hose into sections and glued them to a sole to test whether a hollow shape could cushion on landing and then firm up for push off. Nike had already said no.
Ivory and black is a wardrobe neutral that still has contrast. Recipe one: black training tights or slim joggers with an ivory long sleeve, where the shoe repeats the outfit exactly. Recipe two: cream chinos, a white tee and a black overshirt, an off duty build where the trainer reads as considered rather than sporty. Use them for mixed sessions, gym floors, walking and daily wear, and keep them off wet trail. Fit true to size with a snug midfoot so lateral movement does not shift the foot. Protect the ivory panels before first wear, use a foam cleaner on marks, and air the shoe fully after every session.
On is Swiss designed, headquartered in Zurich, produced in Indonesia and Vietnam, and culturally it reads as engineering worn openly rather than as membership of a scene. It came from triathlon and road racing, crossed into lifestyle when Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and The Roger launched in July 2020, and now holds roughly 6.6 percent of the US performance running category with Hoka as its nearest rival. A versatile trainer in ivory and black is the practical middle of that story, technical enough for a session and plain enough to keep on afterwards.
On engineers foam into specialised cavity geometries, and those cavities compress horizontally as well as vertically. On a versatile trainer that horizontal behaviour is the useful part, because it delivers multi directional support rather than only cushioning a straight line landing, which is what you want when you change direction. CloudTec is a structural system and not a cushioning material, and that is the honest description of what you are standing on. Ivory against black is the most legible way to show it, with the pale body outlining the shape and the black taking the wear. Keep the ivory treated and brushed, and clean the two tones separately.
