The Air Jordan 4 belongs to the Tinker Hatfield era, the stretch from the Air Jordan 3 onward when Nike handed the line to a designer who turned a basketball shoe into a design series with its own vocabulary. The Air Jordan 4 is the most panelled shoe in the early line, with the winged lace cage, the netting side quarters and the moulded heel all doing separate jobs, and a tonal collaboration treatment forces you to read those parts by texture rather than by colour.
