Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 September 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Metallic Silver/White. Silver Toe belongs to a family of Air Jordan 1 make ups where a metallic panel replaces the block of colour that normally sits at the front of the shoe. It is a small change with a large effect, because the toe is the first thing anyone sees and the only panel that catches light as you walk. On a Low, with no collar competing for attention, that metallic front becomes the entire identity of the shoe. Underneath is Peter Moore's 1984 panel layout, drawn with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike had just signed, and reissued continuously since. Silver has no team, no city and no lyric behind it, so this reads as a design decision rather than a reference, which is unusual for the model.
Recipe one: all black, trousers and top, with the silver toe as the single reflective element, and no other metal on you. Recipe two: mid grey tailoring cropped at the ankle with a white shirt, treating the metallic as hardware rather than decoration. Do not pair with gold jewellery or a warm brown belt, which turns the silver cold and cheap by contrast. Lows want the ankle visible. Fit is true with a narrow forefoot. These are an evening and dry weather shoe. Once a metallic toe is scratched or water marked, no cleaner brings it back, so preventive care is the only care that works.
Metallic and material led make ups are Jordan Brand behaving like a fashion house, which is exactly what it became after 1997, when Nike turned the line into a standalone division with its own apparel and collaborations. That path runs through partnerships with Dior, Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, all of which treat the AJ1 as a surface to reinterpret. There is a precedent inside the line too: Tinker Hatfield put patent leather, a formal wear material, onto the Air Jordan XI, and that decision is why an unexpected finish on a basketball shoe no longer surprises anyone.
Leather panels over a rubber cupsole with a stitched Swoosh and an open ankle that needs almost no break in. The metallic toe is the panel that changes how you own the shoe. Metallic finishes scuff to a duller patch rather than a mark you can clean off, and creasing at the toe leaves a permanent lighter line, which is unavoidable because that is precisely where the shoe bends on every step. Lace slightly looser than usual so the flex point sits further back, wipe with a dry cloth rather than a wet one, and keep the pair away from grit. The black and white panels around it are far more forgiving and need only foam and a soft brush.
