Designed by Peter Moore and released on 26 August 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Fire Red/White. Fire red is the hottest, cleanest red in the Air Jordan palette, a brighter and more aggressive tone than the deeper reds the brand also uses, and it belongs to the founding colour set of red, black and white that has functioned as this house's brand colours since 1985. The shoe underneath is Peter Moore's design with Bruce Kilgore, produced for Michael Jordan in November 1984 and released publicly the following April, after Nike had set itself a target of about 3 million dollars over three years and watched the first 50,000 pairs sell out instead. On the Mid, this is the everyday version of the most quoted colour story in sneakers.
Bright red asks for a monochrome base. Black jeans, a white tee and a black jacket is the classic, and it works because the shoe is doing all the shouting. The alternative is heather grey sweats with a plain white tee, a softer frame that stops the red looking formal. Never try to match the red with a garment, since a near miss is worse than plain contrast. Cuff the hem to keep the Mid collar visible. Sizing runs long on many feet, so consider a half size down. Clean with a barely damp cloth, keep the pair away from prolonged sun so the red stays even, and brush the midsole edge rather than bleaching it.
Red and black on this silhouette is the most loaded combination in sneakers because of the Banned campaign. The league's uniform rule required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than change the shoe, and built an advertising campaign around the whole episode, which taught the market that transgression sells. Alongside that, Spike Lee directed Nike's advertising while playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put the shoes into their records. Wearing fire red is the shortest route to quoting all of it.
The upper follows the 1985 panel map, with distinct toe, quarter and collar sections divided by visible stitching, the Swoosh across the side and the Wings logo on the collar. Fire red sits in the leading panels with black and white handling the blocking, which is the arrangement that makes this palette read from across a street. The Mid collar stops below the ankle bone, so the break in is short and the shoe tucks under a hem more easily than a High. Bright red leather shows its crease line clearly across the toe box, so a shoe tree between wears is worth the effort here more than on a dark makeup.
