Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 November 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a patent leather upper in White/Legend Blue. Legend Blue is a pale, cold blue that has run through this line for years, and on the Mid it does something the loud makeups cannot: it makes the Air Jordan 1 look calm. The outline is Peter Moore's, drawn with Bruce Kilgore, the shoe that sold out its first 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars in sales against a Nike plan of about 3 million dollars over three years. Everything since has been a variation on that geometry. A soft blue against white is the version you wear in spring, with no reference to a team, no reference to a rules fight, and no expectation that anyone stops you to ask what they are.
Cold blue sits naturally with white, grey and denim. First: light wash jeans with a white tee and a grey overshirt, the most obvious pairing and the one that works every time. Second: cream trousers with a navy knit, which pushes the same shoe towards something you could wear to lunch rather than a park. Mids want a single cuff so the collar is visible. Keep them out of rain during the first month and let the protector do its work. Brush before every second wear, foam clean the white midsole early, dry away from heat, and store with a tree so the collar keeps its shape.
Even a quiet colourway is carried by a loud history. The Banned advertising was built on the NBA's requirement that shoes be at least 51 percent white and Nike's decision to pay a 5,000 dollar per game fine rather than redesign, and it taught the sneaker market that transgression sells. Hip hop did the rest, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers. The result is a silhouette so well known that a pale blue version needs no explanation at all, which is a luxury very few sneakers have and the reason soft colourways of this shoe keep selling.
Pale blues are unforgiving in daily use, so know that going in. Light panels pick up scuffs from kerbs, other people's shoes and car pedals, and a cold blue shows dirt as a grey cast rather than as a visible mark, which means it fades in appearance before it looks dirty. The Air Jordan 1 Mid carries its collar at ankle height, more upper than a Low and less commitment than a High.
