Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 11 August 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black. A shoe that changes colour with heat is a strange thing to build on a silhouette from 1985, and that is the point. The Air Jordan 1 was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, sold out its initial 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars in sales when Nike had modestly targeted around 3 million dollars over three years. Nothing about it needed reinventing. The SE line is where Jordan Brand takes that settled shape and runs an experiment through it, and a heat reactive finish is one of the more literal ones: the shoe you put on in a cold street is not the shoe you look down at in a warm room.
This one wants to be seen changing, so wear it where the temperature moves. First: plain black trousers with a white tee and a jacket you take off indoors, letting the shoe be the thing people notice when you sit down. Second: grey sweatpants with a hoodie on a bright day, where sunlight does the work. Avoid pairing it with anything else attention seeking, since two novelties in one outfit cancel each other. Care is strict: no washing machine, no solvent cleaner, no drying near heat, no leaving them in a car in summer. Wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and store them boxed at room temperature.
The 1 is the most repeated outline in sneakers, which is exactly why the brand keeps looking for new things to do to it. Its cultural charge came from the Banned advertising, built on the NBA's 51 percent white shoe rule and Nike's willingness to pay a 5,000 dollar per game fine, and from hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put Jordan and his sneakers into their records. Once collecting became a mass activity, novelty had commercial value: the resale market this line anchors has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, and a shoe that does something no photograph fully captures is built for exactly that audience.
Heat reactive finishes are surface chemistry applied to a familiar upper, and they behave like any coating, which means they are the most fragile part of the shoe. The colour shift responds to warmth, so expect the change where your hand rests, where sunlight lands and where the shoe sits against a heater, and expect it to reverse as it cools. Nike has not published the coating type, its expected lifespan or any care specification for this pair, so treat it conservatively. Do not use solvents, do not scrub, and keep it away from sustained high heat, which is the fastest way to exhaust any reactive treatment. The Mid construction underneath is standard, with the collar at ankle height.
