Designed by Peter Moore and released on 17 October 2016 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a satin upper in Black/University Red/White. Satin Banned takes the black and red arrangement tied to the earliest Air Jordan marketing and rebuilds it in satin, swapping the leather that defined the 1985 shoe for a material with a sheen. The 1 was designed by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for the Chicago Bulls rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, produced for Michael Jordan on 17 November 1984 and sold publicly from 1 April 1985, going on to clear its first 50,000 pairs and pass 150 million dollars. This 2016 special edition arrived when the brand had begun treating the silhouette as a material study, and satin was the clearest possible signal that the shoe had left the court behind.
Satin wants evening. Black tailored trousers and a black knit turns this into a genuinely dressed pair, with the red satin catching light instead of shouting. The second recipe is dark denim with a black leather or bomber jacket, which keeps it casual while respecting the material. Do not wear it in wet weather and do not wear it on gravel or worksite ground, since satin scuffs where leather would just mark. Fit runs long and narrow, so a half size down is common. Clean with a dry soft brush along the weave, never scrub across it, and store in a dust bag because satin picks up airborne grime faster than leather does.
The Banned name refers to the advertising, not to a league ruling on this shoe. The NBA uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white and carried a 5,000 dollar per game fine, the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Michael Jordan wore before the Air Jordan 1 released, and Nike chose to pay the fines and build a campaign on the conflict. That decision taught the sneaker market that transgression sells and is arguably the most influential advertising move in the category. Spike Lee directed the earliest work as Mars Blackmon, and rappers including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z carried the shoes into music.
Satin behaves nothing like the leather the 1 was drawn for. It catches light across the panels, it shows handling marks more readily, and it will not crease in the familiar way across the toe box because the surface does not fold like hide. That makes this a shoe to keep away from rain and rough surfaces. Underneath, the platform is unchanged and pre Air, since Nike Air cushioning entered the line with the Air Jordan II, so it rides a rubber cupsole over firm foam. Older pairs also come with the general caution that polyurethane midsoles degrade by hydrolysis over time and Nike has not disclosed the specific polyurethane used, so a long stored pair is not automatically wearable.
