Designed by Peter Moore and released on 27 December 2023 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Dark Smoke Grey/Black/Varsity Red. Craft is Jordan Brand's designation for make ups where material does the talking instead of colour blocking, and Dark Smoke Red is a name from that vocabulary rather than from the 1985 one. The Air Jordan 1 has been the same outline since Peter Moore designed it with Bruce Kilgore, and after the third model turned the line into a design series with recurring codes, the brand learned that a familiar shape in an unfamiliar material is often more interesting than a new shape. This SE takes the Mid, the least ceremonial cut of the 1, and treats it as a surface for texture. A dusty, smoked red is a long way from gym red, and that distance is the point.
Two recipes. First, brown or tobacco corduroy trousers with a cream knit, a full texture play where the shoe belongs to the same conversation as the fabrics above it. Second, charcoal wool trousers with a black overshirt, where the smoked red is the only warm thing in a cold outfit. The Mid works under a cuffed or cropped hem. Size true to length with a snug instep. Brush after every wear before dust settles into the nap, keep the pair out of rain because textured uppers water mark badly, and never use a wet cloth or a chemical cleaner on a napped panel.
Material is the code Jordan Brand trades in. Elephant print, introduced on the third model, now signals the brand on its own without any logo, and patent leather on the eleventh brought a formal wear material onto a basketball court and is why that model gets worn with suits. Craft releases continue that habit at the general release level. Jordan Brand became a Nike division in 1997 and reached about 5.1 billion dollars by 2022, and the reason it can sell texture rather than heritage colour is that the silhouette is already doing the identification work for it.
Craft executions rely on textured and mixed materials rather than on contrast panelling, which changes how you own the shoe. Napped and textured surfaces catch dust in a way smooth leather does not, they mark when wet and they cannot be wiped with a cloth without flattening the nap. Use a suede or textile brush, dry brush first, and only spot treat with water where you have to. Nike Air cushioning has been in the line since the second model and is unchanged underneath. The Mid collar is padded rather than rigid, so it forgives a thicker sock. A muted red will read almost brown in low light and clearly red in daylight, which is exactly what smoked tones are meant to do.
