Origin
Released on 10 October 2023 and part of New Balance's 9060 line. This release has a suede upper in Mushroom/Brown. Brown is the colour sportswear avoids, which is why it suits the 9060 so well. The silhouette is already a deliberate distortion of the 99x runners, the sober family the 990 opened in 1982, with swollen lines and wave shapes where the originals had straight panels. Colouring that in mushroom brown removes the last trace of athletics from it. What you get instead is something closer to furniture or footwear from a different discipline entirely, a sculpted object in a warm domestic shade. For a company whose reputation was built on grey shoes for people who did not want to be noticed, this is a remarkably confident piece of design.
Utility
Warm brown wants to be dressed in texture rather than in colour, so lean on fabric weight. First recipe: corduroy trousers in a wide leg with a cream fisherman knit, where the shoe and the trouser share a temperature. Second: black denim with a brown suede jacket, using the sole's bulk as the counterweight to a heavy top half. The volume needs a hem with width to it, so skip anything slim and tapered. Sizing runs true with a roomy fit, so lace it firmly rather than sizing down. Brush the suede in one direction, keep the mesh away from harsh cleaners, and clean the sculpted midsole with a soft brush, because its grooves collect grit fast.
Influence
New Balance has always built its collaborations around designers and independents rather than mass celebrity, from Paul Smith on a 576 in June 2018 to Action Bronson across several models. That habit changed the house style. Once outside eyes had spent years reinterpreting the archive, the brand's own in line design got braver, and sculptural shoes like this one became possible without any outside name attached. The final formalisation came when Aime Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021. A brown, wave soled runner descended from the plainest shoe in America is what that whole sequence produced.
Construction
Mesh and suede panels wrapped over an exaggerated last, in mushroom brown tones layered close enough that the shape reads as one continuous form rather than a set of parts. Working tonally is what makes an oversized silhouette wearable: contrast would emphasise the bulk, while a single warm register lets it settle. The block N is deconstructed across the side wall as part of the panelling. Underneath, the sculpted midsole with its wave forms sits on a broad rubber outsole, which is where all of the visual mass lives and why the shoe demands a trouser with room. New Balance's multiple width fittings, its oldest technical promise, apply here as they do across the range.
