Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 September 2022 as part of Nike's Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a denim upper in White/Worn Blue/Metallic Gold. The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG is the closest the line gets to reissuing itself honestly: the original ankle height, the original panel layout, the original proportions, all descended from the 1984 signing of Michael Jordan that turned an endorsement deal into a business of its own. The high is where the shape is most itself, because the tall collar and the wing shaped Swoosh were drawn together. This women's execution runs blue as the dominant colour, which puts it in the model's oldest and most legible tradition, a strong shade blocked against white so the panel splits read from across a room. Nothing about the format has needed changing in four decades.
High tops want the ankle visible, so cuff or crop the hem. Wear it with mid wash straight leg denim rolled once, a white tee and a denim or navy jacket, so the blue panels tie into the outerwear. The dressier route: black tailored trousers cropped above the collar, a fitted grey knit and silver hardware, using the blue as the only colour in an otherwise monochrome fit. Women's High OGs fit true to size with a firm collar for the first fortnight, so lace fully to break them in evenly. Protect the white leather before wear one, clean scuffs immediately, and store upright rather than stacked to keep the collar from folding.
The Air Jordan was marketed into culture rather than left to find it. Spike Lee directed the early advertising and appeared as Mars Blackmon, work that made Nike the shoe of basketball and then, through basketball, of hip hop, after which Air Jordans became status objects in urban fashion and staples of mainstream American youth dress. Correct one thing while you are here: the NBA did not ban the Air Jordan 1. The shoe cited under the league's uniform rule was the Nike Air Ship, and Nike paid the fines, then built a campaign around the story. A blue high top carries all of that without needing to explain any of it.
A High OG is a leather panel build with a tall padded collar, and that collar is the reason the shoe wears differently from its low cut sibling: more ankle support, a longer break in period, and a stiffer initial fit that softens into shape over a few weeks. The layered panels each take a colour, which is what makes a blue and white execution look designed rather than dyed. Nike's founding engineering discipline runs underneath, traceable to Bowerman making a rubber sole in a waffle iron because he believed the sole was where a shoe is decided. Condition the leather regularly, keep the white sections sealed, and do not force the collar flat, since creasing there is permanent.
