Released on 30 November 2023 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a leather upper in Off White/Green/Off White. Gazelle Indoor is the version of the Gazelle that goes back towards the sports hall rather than away from it: a lower, flatter, grippier build meant for indoor court surfaces, with the suede upper the family is known for. It sits in the same indoor lineage as the Spezial and the Samba, all of them descended from a company that made a different shoe for every event because its founder watched athletes instead of guessing. This pair is a collaboration with Foot Industry, and the Off White with Green scheme keeps it in the pale, cool register that the Indoor silhouette wears best. It is a shoe for people who already own three Gazelles and want the one with a story attached.
Two recipes. First, pale and cool: off white or light grey trousers with a white tee, letting the green stripes be the single colour decision. Second, ground it in denim: mid wash jeans with a navy or olive overshirt, where the off white upper stays the brightest thing in the fit. Good for daytime, summer and any occasion where a bulky sneaker would feel heavy. Gazelle lasts run narrow and slightly long, so go true unless your foot is broad. Off white suede is the risk: spray before first wear, brush the nap dry rather than washing, spot clean immediately, and keep it away from monsoon puddles because water marks pale suede permanently.
The Gazelle belongs to the terrace half of the adidas story, where the Superstar, the Stan Smith and the Samba became the base layer of European football and casual dressing, and Originals grew out of that adoption rather than out of a marketing plan. Collaboration is the modern way to keep that shape interesting, and adidas essentially wrote the format, from Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 and Stella McCartney since 2004 through Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang. A partner working on the Indoor is playing in the quietest corner of the archive, where changes have to be small to matter, which is a harder brief than a loud silhouette.
Indoor court shoes are built low and wide so you can stop and change direction on a polished floor, and they use a flat gum toned outsole tuned for grip on wood rather than tread for outdoor terrain. The Gazelle's soft suede upper sits over that base and moulds to the foot fast, which is why the shoe creases early and why the creasing looks right. The Three Stripes run along the sidewall carrying the reinforcement role they have had since adidas bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952. In Off White with Green the stripes are the contrast, so the eye reads the stripe geometry first. Expect thin cushioning and a shoe that gets more comfortable the more it is worn.
