Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/White/White. Triple white is the 1 stripped of its argument. This model spent its earliest life in a fight about colour, since the league's uniform policy of the era wanted shoes at least 51 percent white and Nike responded by paying a 5,000 dollar per game fine and building the Banned campaign around it. An all white version is the shoe finally complying, decades late, and it looks completely different for it: with no contrast panels, you read the silhouette Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore as pure shape, seam lines and perforations and the swoosh outline. On the low cut, in grade school sizing, it becomes the most neutral thing the brand makes.
Triple white goes with everything, which is the reason to own it and the reason to be careful with it. Light wash jeans, a white tee and a navy overshirt is the summer default. For something sharper, black trousers with a cropped hem and a black knit gives maximum contrast and makes the shoe the brightest object in the fit. Keep socks white or invisible. Care is the whole deal: protector spray before first wear, mild soap on a soft white cloth, a soft brush at the perforations and immediate attention to any mark. Never machine wash, keep them off wet pavements, and store boxed away from sunlight so the leather does not yellow.
The 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, and by now the shape is legible enough that it does not need colour to announce itself. That legibility came from Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, from the Banned campaign, and from hip hop, where 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z put the shoe into verse. It also came from the brand's collaboration programme, which handed the silhouette to Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS and proved the shape could survive anything done to it. All white is the last test of that: no decoration, still instantly identifiable.
A single colour upper puts all the emphasis on the build. Panelled leather, perforated toe box, low collar, rubber cupsole, Wings stamp on the heel, with the panel edges and stitch rows now the only visual detail on the shoe. That is also the maintenance problem: with no contrast, every scuff and every crease shows at full strength, and a mark on the toe reads across the whole shoe rather than being absorbed by a darker panel. Fit is the standard 1 low, snug through the instep with a full toe box and lateral hold coming from lacing rather than from an ankle collar. Triple white rewards a protector spray before first wear more than any other colourway here.
