Designed by Peter Moore and released on 26 July 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Electric Green/White/Sail. WearAway is one of the few sneaker ideas that treats damage as the product. The upper is built so that the outer surface abrades with use and reveals a different colour underneath, which means the shoe you buy is not the shoe you end up with. On the Air Jordan 1, a silhouette whose entire retro economy is built on keeping pairs pristine, that is a genuinely subversive proposal. Electric green is the payoff colour, bright enough that the reveal registers immediately. Style code DO8244 003 marks the grade school run, which is fitting: children wear shoes hard enough to actually finish the design rather than protecting it.
Because the shoe changes over time, keep the outfit constant and neutral. Black joggers with a plain white tee is the right base, letting the green reveal show up as the only colour, and mid wash denim with a grey sweatshirt works the same way for school days. Avoid green anywhere else, since the reveal needs to be the only one. The Low needs no cuffing. Check grade school sizing with growing room at the toe. Clean with a soft dry brush and minimal water, never a stiff brush or a solvent, and resist the urge to protect the upper, because protection defeats the entire design.
The Air Jordan 1 became the founding object of sneaker collecting as a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the wider resale market valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, and that culture is built on condition. A shoe that improves by being ruined argues against all of it. The model can host that argument because its cultural position is unshakeable, established through Spike Lee's Nike advertising, where he directed and played Mars Blackmon opposite Michael Jordan, and through 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z naming the shoes on record.
The Low keeps the original 1985 panel map with the collar cut below the ankle bone, so it needs no break in and slides under a hem easily. The WearAway treatment sits on the upper surface, designed to be worn through at the flex points and contact areas first, which means the toe box and the outer panel will change before anything else does. That is intended behaviour rather than a defect. Grade school sizing runs on a shorter, narrower last than the adult version, so check the conversion before buying. Do not use aggressive cleaning on this upper: scrubbing will remove the top layer unevenly and skip the gradual reveal the design is built around.
