Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 29 September 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Dark Concord/Black/White/New Emerald. Black Grape puts purple against black on the Air Jordan 1 Mid, and purple has been one of the more productive detours in this brand's colour history. The founding palette was fixed: Chicago red, black and white, taken straight off a Bulls kit after Nike signed Michael Jordan on 26 October 1984 and asked Peter Moore to draw him a shoe. Everything since has been the brand testing how far it can move from that starting point without losing the reading. Grape purple is far enough to feel like a choice and close enough that the shoe still announces itself immediately. The Mid cut is where most of that experimentation lands, because it is the version people buy.
Black with a purple accent is easier than a full purple shoe. Black jeans and a grey crew keeps the outfit neutral so the accent panels read as the only colour. The second recipe brings the purple upward: a black outfit with one purple element at the top, a beanie or a knit, so the shoe rhymes with something rather than standing alone. Avoid navy, which sits awkwardly beside grape purple. Mid cut works cuffed or with a slight break. Wipe the black panels, protect the purple ones, keep it out of heavy rain in the first month, and loosen the laces before pulling the shoe off.
The Air Jordan 1's colour catalogue is one of the widest in footwear because the shoe stopped needing a justification for any of it. Jordan Brand has been a standalone Nike division since 1997, generating about 5.1 billion dollars in 2022 with a reported 150 to 256 million dollars flowing to Jordan himself under the royalty deal struck in 1984. That scale funds hundreds of colourways a year. Underneath sits the culture that made it possible: Spike Lee's Mars Blackmon advertising, hip hop from 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. to Ice Cube and Jay-Z, and a resale market valued at roughly two billion dollars.
Black carries the body of this shoe and purple lands in the accent panels, which is the smart way round: dark uppers hide daily scuffing while the accent panels stay small enough to protect. The Mid collar clears the ankle bone without the High's full wrap and folds forward once broken in, giving the cut its characteristic look. Nike Air cushioning has been part of this line since the Air Jordan II. Saturated purple can transfer onto light hems and light socks in the first few wears, so start with dark socks. Clean the midsole with a dedicated brush, because a pale sole under a black and purple upper is the first thing to look tired.
