AIR JORDAN 1 RETRO HIGH OG WMNS "Metallic Gold"
AIR JORDAN 1 RETRO HIGH OG WMNS "Metallic Gold"
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Metallic Gold on a women's Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG is the line dressing up. Gold has no basketball meaning here, no team and no anniversary attached, it is simply the finish you use when you want a shoe to look like an occasion. Underneath it is the original specification: full high collar, original panel proportions, the Wings logo on the ankle, Nike Air on the tongue. Peter Moore designed that shoe with Bruce Kilgore for a Chicago Bulls rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, and it reached the public on 1 April 1985. Four decades on, this pattern is confident enough to carry metallic panels without looking like a novelty.
Utility
Two fits. Evening: black tailored trousers or a black midi skirt, a plain black knit, and no other metal anywhere, so the gold on the shoe is the only shine. Or daytime streetwear: mid wash denim cuffed above the collar, a white tee, and a black leather jacket, where the gold reads as a detail rather than a statement. Highs need a shorter or cuffed hem to be visible at all. The women's last is cut narrow, so half a size up helps a broader foot. Wipe the metallic panels with a soft damp cloth only, clean the leather separately, and store in the box to protect the coating.
Influence
The house mark on this shoe has its own story. The Jumpman, a silhouette of Jordan mid leap with his legs split, came about after Peter Moore saw a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Olympics and had Jordan recreate the pose in Bulls gear. Rentmeester sued Nike in 2015 over the logo and the Ninth Circuit ruled for Nike in February 2018, finding the images not substantially similar. That mark now sits on a brand generating about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike in 2022. A gold finished High OG is that logo treated as jewellery, which is roughly what it has become.
Construction
The upper is leather on the standard OG panel set, with metallic gold applied to accent panels and hardware. Metallic finishes are a surface coating rather than a dye, and they behave differently from leather: they scratch rather than scuff, they lift along crease lines rather than dulling evenly, and once damaged they cannot really be restored. Keep brushes and abrasive cleaners off the gold entirely and use a soft, barely damp cloth. The women's High sits on a narrower last, holding the ankle closer. Lace and unlace carefully if the eyelet hardware carries the metallic treatment, and store the pair so the gold panels are not rubbing against other shoes.
