Culture Note™
Designed by Tinker Hatfield and released on 30 October 2021 as part of the Air Jordan 3 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Pine Green/Cement Grey/White. The third model is where the line changed hands and changed nature. Nike gave design to Tinker Hatfield, and from the Air Jordan III onward the series had its own language: the cracked elephant print arrived, and the Jumpman replaced the Wings logo that had marked the earliest era on the tongue. That swap is the whole brand in one detail, a basketball with wings giving way to a silhouette of a player mid leap. Pine Green takes that historically loaded shoe and dresses it in a deep forest tone, a colour with no connection to Chicago red, black and white, which is exactly why it reads as clothing rather than as memorabilia.
Forest green is a cold weather colour that behaves like a neutral. First: brown corduroy trousers with a cream knit and a tan jacket, an earth tone outfit where the green ties everything to the ground. Second: black jeans with a grey sweatshirt, a plain combination where the elephant print supplies the only texture. The 3 has real volume, so avoid a hem that breaks across the toe. Protector spray before first wear is worth it on any pair with printed panels. Brush after every wear, clean early rather than deeply, air dry away from heat, and store upright so the midsole is not compressed under other boxes.
The Jumpman on this tongue is the mark that ended up on everything. Peter Moore had Jordan recreate a leaping pose in Bulls gear after seeing a Jacobus Rentmeester photograph shot before the 1984 Olympics, and Rentmeester later sued Nike over it, with the Ninth Circuit ruling for Nike in February 2018 on the grounds that the images were not substantially similar. That is the actual legal history behind the most reproduced logo in sport. The 3 is where it first appeared on a shoe, and every colourway of this model, loud or quiet, is carrying that mark on the tongue.
Deep green against grey elephant print is a quieter contrast than red or black, and it changes what you notice: the texture of the print rather than the pattern of it. That grey cracked surface holds dirt in its cracks, so brush it dry and never scrub it wet, while the green panels take a foam cleaner and a soft brush. Air cushioning entered the line at the second model and has never left. No stack height, foam density or leather grade is published for this pair and none is guessed here. Dark greens hide scuffing well but show water marks, so dry them slowly at room temperature and keep them away from radiators, which also yellow midsoles.
