Designed by Peter Moore and part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Palomino/White/Wild Berry. Purple Mocha takes the Air Jordan 1 Low somewhere the original never went. Mocha is the earth tone the model wears best, a soft coffee brown that behaves like a neutral, and purple is the disruption sitting underneath it. Neither belongs to the red, black and white scheme that operates as Jordan Brand's own colour identity, which is the point. The Low was born as a stripped version of Peter Moore's 1984 design, released to the public in April 1985 as a high top and cut down later, and its flat panelling has become the brand's most reliable canvas for exactly this kind of pairing. Brown and purple is a fashion combination rather than a basketball one, and this shoe is comfortable being read that way.
Recipe one, warm: cream or ecru wide trousers, a chocolate knit, a tan jacket, so the mocha melts into the outfit and the purple flashes only when you walk. Recipe two, cool: charcoal denim, a grey hoodie, black outerwear, and the brown and purple pairing does all the work against a flat backdrop. Skip navy, which fights the purple. Lows take a cuffed or cropped hem best, and they run true to size with a slightly narrow forefoot. Good for long days on foot and for travel, since the palette hides dust. Sneaker collecting as a mass activity began with this line, and the resale market it anchors carries a valuation around two billion dollars, with original 1985 pairs trading near twenty thousand dollars. Colourways like this one are the reason the market kept growing after the archive ran out: not reissues of famous shoes but new palettes on a shape everyone already recognises. Jordan Brand's collaboration programme built the same appetite from the other direction, working with Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. The AJ1 Low is the quickest member of the family to break in because there is nothing above the ankle bone to resist you. Mocha leather is the practical half of this make up: brown hides scuffing, absorbs light rather than reflecting it, and ages into something warmer instead of dirtier.
