Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 26 July 2022 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/Electric Green/White/Sail. Wear Away is one of the few Air Jordan 1 ideas that changes over time on purpose. The Low uses the 1985 pattern with the collar cut down, the shape Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore after Nike signed a Bulls rookie in October 1984, and then layers an outer surface over an electric green underneath. Walking, scuffing and brushing take the top layer down and expose the colour, so the shoe you buy is not the shoe you end up with. That is a deliberate inversion of a market where original condition is everything, and it is the sort of idea Jordan Brand can afford to run on its most recognised silhouette. Style code DN3705 003.
Since the shoe develops, dress it simply and let it change. First: black straight leg denim, a plain white tee, black socks, so the green emerging at the toe is the only event. Second: grey sweatpants cuffed above the collar with a grey hoodie, a fully neutral base that makes each new patch of green visible. Occasion is daily wear, and unusually the more you walk the better this pair gets. Fit is true to length with a narrow midfoot. Care: do not use protector spray if you want the effect, brush deliberately with a medium brush to reveal areas evenly, and keep the midsole clean so the developing upper stays the focus.
The Air Jordan 1 created sneaker collecting as a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX and the resale market it anchors valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, a market that prizes deadstock condition above all else. A wear away make up argues the opposite case: value through use. That argument has roots in the model's own history, in the Banned advertising built on the NBA's uniform rule and Nike's willingness to pay the fine rather than conform, and in the hip hop culture that made worn Jordans a statement rather than a failure.
The base is the standard Low panel map: wing tip toe with perforations, separate eyestay, stitched Swoosh panel, low collar and a rubber cupsole with the forefoot pivot circle. The difference is the treated outer layer over an electric green base, applied to the panels rather than to the tooling. Where the shoe flexes and rubs, the toe box, the Swoosh edges and the heel, the green comes through first. You can accelerate it deliberately with a brush or leave it to happen, but the process is one directional. Care instructions for a normal sneaker work against this shoe, which is the point.
