Designed by Peter Moore and released on 3 November 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Laser Fuchsia. Laser Fuchsia is an unapologetically bright pink, and on a pre school Dunk Low it is exactly right, because small sizes are where Nike lets colour run without restraint. The Dunk Low itself is a basketball shape that stopped playing basketball and became a colour vehicle, which is why it scales down so well: nothing about the design depends on performance. Nike has been in the business of building shoes children grow up wanting since its models became staples of mainstream American youth dress in the 1980s, and the kids sizes of an adult icon are how that cycle keeps renewing itself.
Two ways to use it. Everyday: leggings or jeans with a plain sweatshirt, letting the pink be the whole outfit and everything else stay simple. Or for play: shorts and a tee in summer, where a bright shoe is easier to spot across a park. Buy with a thumb of growing room at the toe rather than sizing up a full step, since too much room makes children trip. Check fit every couple of months, because feet at this age change faster than shoes wear out. Wipe with a damp cloth, air dry, and never put them in a machine or on a radiator.
Nike shoes became status symbols in urban and hip hop fashion from the 1980s and staples of mainstream American youth dress, then returned in 1990s and 2000s casual and athleisure looks, which means the Dunk arrives in a child's wardrobe already carrying meaning their older siblings understand. Nike SB gave the model its skate credibility and fashion gave it longevity. In a pre school size, none of that history is the point for the wearer, but it is the reason this exact shape, rather than any generic kids sneaker, is the one on the shelf.
The pre school build keeps the Dunk Low panel layout at a smaller scale: leather upper with a contrast Swoosh, eyestay, collar and heel, a foam midsole and a rubber outsole with the circular pivot pattern. Kids builds are usually made easier to get on and off, and the low profile and flat sole give a stable base for running around rather than a soft, unstable one. There is no visible Air unit, so the shoe is light and the child does not have to carry unnecessary bulk. Bright fuchsia leather is easier to wipe clean than a pale tone, which is a genuine advantage in this size range where the shoe will meet playgrounds daily.
