Court Purple is a basketball colour name on a shoe that stopped being about basketball a long time ago, and the Pro designation is Nike SB telling you this one is built to be skated rather than displayed. Suede is the material skateboarding chose for itself, because it holds up against grip tape better than smooth leather and because it looks better as it wears down. Put the two together and you get the clearest statement of what SB is: a court silhouette, a court colour, and a material and build specification decided entirely by people who use shoes as equipment. The name still points at a gym floor nobody in this scene has been near.
Purple suede is richer than it looks in photographs and pairs best with washed neutrals. Loose faded black jeans, a grey hooded sweatshirt and white socks pulled up gives the skate reading. For something cleaner, charcoal wool trousers with a black crew neck, where the purple becomes a deliberate texture rather than a colour statement. Dry weather only, since suede and rain is a losing combination and a water mark on a dyed nap will not lift. Sizing runs long on the Dunk last, though skaters often go true to size for board feel. Brush after each wear rather than cleaning occasionally.
Nike's first professional athlete endorser was the tennis player Ilie Nastase, and its first track endorser was Steve Prefontaine, whose statue stands at the company headquarters. The brand grew up on court and track sports where the athlete was the argument. Skateboarding worked the other way around: skaters adopted Nike shoes before there was a division selling to them, and Nike SB has spent its life earning the right to be there through riders, shops and small releases rather than through campaigns. A purple suede Pro model is that arrangement in physical form.
An SB Pro build. Suede upper for abrasion resistance, a heavily padded tongue and collar to take impact, a Zoom Air insole underfoot, and a rubber cupsole with skate specific tread. Nike Air here is a sealed pressurised unit doing work you feel in the heel rather than a window you look at. Purple suede is a dyed nap, so brush it dry with a suede brush in one direction, never soak it, and expect the colour to lighten where it abrades. The ollie area on the medial side is the first place a skated pair fails. Worn casually, the suede holds shape and colour for a long time.
