Black upper, white stripes, scarlet trim. This is the Samba at its most graphic, three values with nothing in between them, and it is the version that photographs hardest. Scarlet on black is a much sharper pairing than red on white, because the dark ground makes the red look brighter than it actually is. adidas has kept this silhouette current for decades by treating it as a surface rather than a project, changing nothing structural and letting colour carry each release. The Three Stripes have anchored that approach since Adi Dassler bought the mark from Karhu Sports in 1952 and started calling the company the three stripes company.
High contrast wants a plain frame. Black straight leg jeans with a white tee and a black jacket keeps the outfit inside the shoe's own three colours. Or use the scarlet as a link, wearing washed grey trousers with a red cap so the accent repeats at both ends. Avoid busy prints, which turn the whole look noisy. This shape runs long and narrow, so size a half down unless your foot is wide. adidas has run India as a priority market with local faces rather than imported ones, signing Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh in 2015 and fronting a cricket campaign with Virat Kohli before he moved to Puma in 2017. Black, white and red is the palette that translates most easily across those markets, loud enough to register in a campaign frame and neutral enough to wear daily. The Samba became the shoe it is now through exactly this kind of wide adoption rather than through any single endorsement, which is the pattern adidas has followed since Run-DMC wrote My Adidas unpaid in 1986.
A black leather upper with a suede overlay across the toe, white Three Stripes stitched along the quarter and scarlet used as a trim accent, over the low flat outsole this shape has always used. The stripes function as reinforcement as well as identification, which is how adidas first sewed them onto uppers. Black is the most practical base the Samba comes in, hiding dust and street marks in a way white leather cannot, and the white stripes are the part that will need attention first. Underfoot there is no cushioning technology at all, so this is a low, planted, ground feel shoe rather than a comfort one.
